ROMAN PROSTITUTE’S RING, 2ND-5TH CENTURY AD, SIZE 3+

A3532

Regular price $350.00 Sale

Gilt bronze, over size 3. Ridge band, 3.8 mm width with the usual Roman thickened bottom. The shoulders with raised lugs identified as Guiraud type 3, sub d. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, p.62. The bezel of ribbed cylindrical form superficially imitating a gemstone and blatantly advertising the intentions of the wearer. Roman prostitutes were typically adolescents, largely slaves. Prostitution was practiced openly with brothels sometimes sharing doors with libraries. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.  A Roman ring of classic fashion form, executed in exaggerated detail for the prostitution market.
